Pilonidal Disease Glossary

This glossary explains common words used during pilonidal evaluation and treatment. It is educational and does not replace an individual diagnosis.

Abscess

A painful collection of infected fluid that may require prompt drainage.

Bascom cleft lift

An off-midline operation that removes affected tissue and shallows the cleft. It is also called a cleft-lift procedure.

Cystectomy

Surgical removal of pilonidal cyst or sinus tissue. The exact closure method matters when discussing recovery and recurrence.

Gips procedure

A minimally invasive approach that removes pits and cleans sinus tracts through small openings. It is related to pit-picking techniques.

Gluteal cleft

The groove between the buttocks where pilonidal disease usually develops.

Incision and drainage

A procedure that opens an acute abscess to release infected material and relieve pressure.

Off-midline closure

A closure positioned away from the deepest part of the cleft.

Pilonidal sinus

A tract beneath the skin that can connect one or more pits or openings.

Pit

A small opening in the midline where hair and debris may enter the skin.

Recurrence

Return of symptoms or disease after treatment. Definitions and follow-up periods vary across studies.

Salvage surgery

Treatment intended to correct recurrent disease, a non-healing wound, or failure after an earlier operation.
